2D Class Week 13 Film 5 – The Thing
The Thing
John Carpenter was the director for this film. He has a long and storied career, and has directed gems like Escape from New York, Escape from LA, Halloween, They Live and The Fog.
2 Artistically, what did you like about this film?
The Thing is one of my favorite movies. The sound design, score, lighting, atmosphere, and stop motion effects are fantastic. I love the way the movie builds tension with the score and scenery, rather than relying on jump scares.
3. Who is The Thing at the end of the movie?
It is possible that either Childs or MacReady are the Thing at the end of the movie. Childs disappeared for some time when the survivors were torching the entire facility, not to mention there was still a thing lurking around with the doctor's appearance. MacReady however, also had disappeared earlier in the movie, and glasses man found his jacket and was burned to death in the snow (MacReady was one of the few with a flamethrower.) It is highly possible that the monster staged the reactant blood test (where MacReady "proved" he was not a monster) to throw the others off his trail. MacReady as the Thing would then just have to sacrifice his other forms in order to make it appear that he indeed was a human. This is completely possible logic for the monster, as it seemed to have at least hyper intelligence (as it was constructing a space ship in secret from random spare parts).
