2D Class Week 08 Film - Blade Runner

This week we watched the movie Blade Runner.

1. Who was the director of the film? What other movies has this director produced?
Ridley Scott was the director of this film, and is well known for directing films like Alien, Thelma and Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Hannibal, American Gangster, and The Martian.

2. Artistically, what did you like about the film?
I really enjoyed the lighting in this film, as well as the use of miniatures for sets. This movie clearly had a huge impact on future cyberpunk works, as much of the design and feel of the world echoed in movies like Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix.

3. Was Deckard a replicant?
I feel the answer of this question to be based largely on the cut of the movie. Ridley Scott himself seems to believe that Deckard is a replicant, and though he strongly implies it in this cut (with the Unicorn dream sequence), it is still left up to the audience to decide. I personally don’t think Deckard is a replicant, as he does not have the tell-tale replicant eyes. I would assume that If Deckard was originally intended to be replicant, there would be major scenes where Deckard would immediately begin to question his own replicant status after meeting Rachel. However, due to the unicorn scene in this cut, it is strongly implied that Deckard’s dreams are implanted, as Edward James Olmos leaves an origami unicorn for Deckard to find near the end of the film. Despite this, following his encounter with Roy, Deckard clearly chooses to embrace living in the moment, and does not seem to care whether or not he actually is replicant, choosing instead to escape with Rachel.
